I'm setting out this week for a week in the Monterey area on the central Coast.

Thursday night, 7 p.m., I'll give a talk at San Carlos Cathedral, pictured above. The oldest building in California, the oldest jokes...No, seriously, I'm going to come up with some new ones on the long drive up. Everyone's invited: Catholics, alkies, Catholic alkies, anti-Catholic alkies, non-alkies, non-Catholics.

On the way back home, I'll stop in Santa Maria and spend a night or two with my friends from the Guadalupe Catholic Worker. More Lenten joy. I'm fasting (more or less) from sugar.

Happy Cesar Chavez Day. It's a state holiday in California, as it should be.

  1. I'm a native/resident of Salinas --- which is Oakland to Monterey's San Francisco. But we're proud of the dirt under our fingernails and the sweat stains on the bills of our caps. If you get a chance, come visit the National Steinbeck Center here. The admission is a bit pricey but it's worth the time. Sorry I won't be able to hear you at the mission. I'm prepping for back surgery and I have a lot of affairs to get in order. This Southern Baptist who admires your writing so much that I'm observing lent this year would appreciate your prayers of intercession, God bles, Jim Albanese

    1. Jim, thank you--I drove through Salinas in the early morning dark on my way home from Monterey last summer. Thanks for the National Steinbeck Center tip. I am touched that you've felt moved to observe Lent this year. And prayers for your back surgery/getting your affairs in order.

  2. And Heather, if you have a need for any healing (body and soul), and you have an extra 45 minutes while in Santa Maria, I suggest (from experience) that you check out the healing rooms of Santa Maria Valley. Their ministry is grounded and founded upon worship, the round-the-clock kind done in ancient (and modern) monasteries, though it is non-Catholic. There are some current healing stores here Bon Voyage from a fellow writer who will be in touch about your services soon.

    1. Thank you, Beth--I'm only there for a short time which we will probably spend non-stop gabbing and eating but I love travel and healing tips.

  3. Well...I went to the San Carlos presentation. It was a very worthwhile time but I cannot imagine anything that Fr. Dooling recommends NOT being very worthwhile.
I would send you an e-mail as Fr. Patrick recommended but your 'email' link will not open.......I'm loathe to put my e-mail out there and I am not on Facebook so for now this is as good as it gets for me....
Permit me to say that I agree with one of your sentiments that made me laugh out loud: Almost (not quite but almost) all of the post-Vatican II music should be banned! One of the great gifts we have is MAGNIFICENT Church music but some of the quasi-Hootenany (sp) stuff is simply AWFUL! Ditto guitars ---and almost every jazz Mass .
( Aside:I've not yet opened up the K Kuhlman YouTube---but she did manage to nearly shut down a missile defense of San Francisco once when I was in the USAF trying to figure out why an installment on Mt. Tam was nearly non-functioning---BUT that's another story.)
I do hope to be able to contact you more directly one day.
    Pax tecum
